Review of Trans Formations by Alex Clare-Young

It was a brilliant read! It details not just the experiences of several non binary and trans individuals, but also the in-depth process undertaken by the author in gathering this research. Refreshingly, it’s not a book ABOUT trans/nonbinary people, but written BY them- and that makes all the difference.

The ‘interludes’ or sections where people talk of their own experiences with their identities and faith were for me, the absolute gems of the book. There is a lot of pain described, a lot of exclusion, bigotry and wilful ignorance- but so much joy. A sense of finding God was waiting for you the whole time for you to find yourself. A little heavy and academic in places, but well worth it. Also, the definitions are brilliantly succinct for anyone unfamiliar with the terminology!

It’s a book which celebrates people who have often found themselves on the outside, who listens to their stories and experiences. But perhaps more importantly for me, it’s a book which celebrates the beautiful, encompassing love between God and all of Their children.
